UNCUT
Unpolished. Untouched. Unimproved.
The island has not been manicured, improved, or optimized for visitor experience. The beach driftwood stays where the tide leaves it. The palms stand at whatever angle the wind taught them. The marsh does not apologize for the smell of sulfur at low tide.
The feral animals live in the interior on their own terms. The Ossabaw hog — a genetically distinct strain descended from Spanish livestock of the 16th century — is a living artifact of first contact. The Spanish donkeys brought by colonists centuries ago have sterilized their remaining population and will not be replaced. The island is in conversation with its own end.
The buildings are historic and maintained but not restored to false condition. The main house dates to the early 20th century. The outbuildings show their age honestly. Nothing has been renovated to look like itself.
This is the original agreement between the island and those who visit: the island on its own terms. No adjustment for comfort. No explanation. No apology for what it is.
