A storm from the southwest. The tree stands without strategy — it has stood through every storm that came before this one and will stand through those that follow. The sky is doing violence and the tree is simply a tree. This is the painting that contains the island's essential argument: the place does not perform for visitors. It continues. The darkness at the top of the canvas is not symbolic — that was the actual color of that sky at that moment. Some places require large gestures to be seen accurately.
