The sabal palms and the slash pines stand together, each species indifferent to the other, both indifferent to us. The light here is golden and specific to this latitude, this time of year, this exact hour. The dead palms stand alongside the living. The island does not remove what has died — it integrates it. A lesson the residency artists took home in different forms. The green in the foreground is saw palmetto, which covers most of the island's interior and which the island's feral hogs root through constantly.
